Oh Baby - It's Cold Outside
Thursday, February 03 @ 14:49:58 EST
by Mark
Oh baby.  It's definitely cold outside and snuggle weather is upon us again.  Once we get that 'shiver' thing going,   it's sometimes difficult to stop.  I guess it's to be expected in the morning when we get in a cold car (love those vinyl seats) or when we take out the garbage in our pajamas, but you know it's cold when you need to snuggle just to keep your teeth from chattering when you go to bed at night.  My wife kind of likes me this winter...

Shivering is involuntary muscle tensing that generates heat and offers a warming effect. When you first become slightly chilled, you'll find yourself doing an isometric type of muscle tensing that can increase your metabolic rate two to four times.

WattBusters Super Bowl AD
Thursday, February 03 @ 14:38:16 EST
by Mark
Watch for the new WattBusters commercial during the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 6th. You can forget about Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake. This year should be much more family-oriented since there aren't too many worries about Paul McCartney having a wardrobe 'malfunction' during halftime. Keep your eyes peeled to stay abreast of all the technological changes in energy savings products.

The WattBusters ad will be .025 seconds long at a cost of $2000. You'll have to watch closely.

December 2004: Thanks from WattBusters
Tuesday, December 28 @ 18:03:11 EST

From all of us at WattBusters, we would like to thank everyone who purchased energy-saving products in 2004.

We've learned a lot about the reasons that people change old products for new.  The motivations were not as cut and dry as we had originally thought.

The main reasons that people bought energy efficient products was to save money/energy.

Technology and Safer Chimneys
Tuesday, December 28 @ 18:00:32 EST

(ARA) - While new hearth products have made fireplace ownership much more convenient, maintenance requirements have remained steady.

Many American homeowners assume that their chimneys only need to be cleaned and inspected if they burn wood in their fireplaces or wood stoves. But almost all heating appliances, whether fueled by gas, oil, wood or coal, rely on chimneys and vents to safely carry toxic gases, like carbon monoxide (CO), out of the home.

Hot Tips in a Cold Bathroom

The one room that many homeowners overlook when winterizing their house is the bathroom, which -- in the winter -- can often feel like the coldest room in the house.

Bare feet on tile in January in Michigan really do wake you up in the morning. There are a number of ways to take the chill from your bathroom, ranging from fixes requiring a contractor, to easy-do-it-yourself ideas. Whatever your budget, here are some of the solutions that may work for you.

NEW YORK, Nov 16, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) - article from EnergyCentral

Strong demand for coal from China and India is driving coal production to record levels, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

Ancient Baghdad Battery

Sitting in the National Museum of Iraq is a earthenware jar about the size of a man's fist. Its existence could require history books throughout the world to be rewritten.

According to most texts the "voltic pile," or electric battery, was invented in 1800 by the Count Alassandro Volta. Volta had observed that when two dissimilar metal probes were placed against frog tissue, a weak electric current was generated. Volta discovered he could reproduce this current outside of living tissue by placing the metals in certain chemical solutions. For this, and his other work with electricity, we commemorate his name in the measurement of electric potential called the volt.

Cow Flatulence - Global Warming Stinks
Monday, November 29 @ 18:14:56 EST
by Mark
Air quality and global warming are dynamic environmental and political issues that are often aimed at large, industrial businesses but here's a different take on the subject. Some studies show that cow gas emanating from either end of the cow may have a profound affect on the atmosphere. The gas in question is methane.

Bacteria in the stomachs of cows break down and ferment fodder during digestion, producing methane. The 'southern' end of the cow creates manure and we can collect the methane it gives off as it ferments for use in generating electricity. The procedure is relatively simple: manure is stored in huge tanks - anaerobic digesters - which are deprived of oxygen and kept at temperatures of 100°F, much like the stomach of a cow. The conditions are designed to let anaerobic bacteria thrive and do the work of breaking the manure down. The large volume of "biogas" released - which contains about 90% methane - is piped to an engine which burns the gas and uses the heat energy to generate electricity. The leftover manure is compressed; fluid is drained away and used as fertilizer; and the solids are dried out and used as bedding for the herd and compost.

Travel, Turkey and the Thanksgiving Flush
Monday, November 29 @ 18:07:04 EST
by Mark

For many Americans, Thanksgiving is a time to visit family, eat massive amounts of turkey and watch football. It's a festive time of year (unless you happen to be a turkey) and there's usually not even the germ of an idea about energy or water savings going on inside of our brains. I can fix that - or break it, depending on your point of view.
