Global Warming Awareness Rally Monday, July 12 @ 17:33:26 EDT by webmaster
Business, science, religious, political, television and personal entities combined on the lawn of the Michigan State Capitol Building on June 15th, 2004 to voice their ideas and concerns about global warming. After a short parade, presentations were delivered pertaining to our stewardship of resources on the earth. Some speakers were quite emotionally strident while others calmly listed factual data on the condition of Michigan's environment/human relationship.

Electricity Costs Expected to Rise Monday, July 12 @ 17:27:45 EDT by webmaster
WASHINGTON - Gasoline prices aren't the only energy cost rising. Retail electricity prices for the air conditioning season in June, July and August are expected to average 9.5 cents per kilowatt-hour, up 3.5% from 2003, according to data recently released by the Energy Department.
The prices are expected to peak in June and slowly decline in July and August. Although there is expected to be enough electricity, regional shortages aren't out of the question. The head of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has warned Californians they might have blackouts this summer, reminiscent of 2001. The good news is the increase in electricity prices will be smaller than last summer's 4.9% gain. The bad news is the rise in prices comes as consumers pay more for all forms of energy, including a 37% jump in the cost to fill up their gas tanks from a year ago.

The Electric Bill Shrinketh - A True Story Tuesday, June 08 @ 17:35:19 EDT by webmaster
All
of us at WattBusters are versed in ways to save energy, but that's nothing
new. We let you know that compact fluorescent bulbs are energy efficient and
will save you money. Well it's time to show you our cards. I've pulled my last
4 electric bills so you can see what the savings amount to in a real-world
situation.
First a little background. I live near Detroit and I
rent a small
home with a basement. I replaced the bulbs that were most
used. I had 60-watt, dollar-store incandescent bulbs throughout the
house. Cheap, but a major pain since they burn out so often. I
never even figured in how much energy they used because I figured I was
getting them for next to nothing.

In the summer months, municipal water use doubles. This is the season when
people are outdoors watering lawns and gardens, filling swimming pools and
washing cars. Summer peak demand places stress on municipal water systems and
increases costs for water users. As water supplies diminish
during periods of low rainfall, some municipalities must declare restrictions
on lawn and garden watering. By applying some handy tips, your lawn and garden
can cope with drought conditions and you can minimize water wastage.

You're in Hot Water - Tankless Water Heaters Tuesday, June 08 @ 17:29:06 EDT by webmaster
You're in hot water now. All the time. As much as you want, when you want it.
You are if you install a tankless water heater in your home. These energy efficient wonders have been used for years in Europe where energy costs are several times more than in North America. Tankless water heaters are compact and don't require their own mechanical room.
With a conventional tank water heater, you heat water all the time. Energy is used nearly all day to maintain a preset temperature. When water cools, the system kicks on to reheat the water. This cycle repeats over and over.

Life with the Fresh2Ti Tuesday, June 08 @ 17:21:09 EDT by webmaster
"Come one, come all. Dr. Snaggle's Snake Oil Potion creates brilliant light AND gets rid of horrible odors at the same time!"
Yeah, sure. We've all heard that type of pitch before. Same old story, right? Wrong. I originally didn't buy into the hype surrounding the new Fresh2Ti bulb because it sounded too good to be true. Technical specs on products are well and good but the one thing that can sway my opinion is true, real-world experience.

Blackout - The Story Continues Tuesday, June 08 @ 17:18:26 EDT by webmaster
The joint US-Canadian task force responsible for tracking down the cause of the August 14th blackout stated in their final report that there was a disregard of the rules intended to ensure the flow of reliable electricity. This disregard, coupled with inadequate monitoring of events by a regional grid system operator contributed to the outages that affected 8 states and portions of Canada. Other factors were communications problems, faulty equipment and inadequate training.
The report cast much of the blame on Ohio-based FirstEnergy Corp., saying that it failed to recognize and respond to problems on three of their lines in time to stop the cascading outages. FirstEnergy has contended that the grid problems were more widespread.
