 Global Warming Awareness Rally

Business, science, religious, political, television and personal entities combined on the lawn of the Michigan State Capitol Building on June 15th, 2004 to voice their ideas and concerns about global warming. After a short parade, presentations were delivered pertaining to our stewardship of resources on the earth. Some speakers were quite emotionally strident while others calmly listed factual data on the condition of Michigan's environment/human relationship.

Business leaders spoke of the benefits of Green Gazelles, "small, high-growth potential, entrepreneurial companies" that are pioneering cutting-edge technologies, such as wind energy and alternative manufacturing processes. By virtue of their size and aggressiveness Green Gazelles are able to get out to a quick lead in the deployment of newer, cleaner technologies. Gazelles were responsible for creating about 70% of the net new jobs in the U.S. economy between 1992 and 1996, yet they accounted for only about 3% of nine million enterprises. Gazelles offer the promise of a whole new jobs base for Michigan, and the business community is working towards more promotion by state government.

Individuals at the rally did not automatically point the finger at business and they generally seemed to understand that we each have a role in the environment. It's still 'The Day Before Tomorrow'. The goal of a responsible, sustainable and  environmentallysound energy solution may still be over the horizon but with a coalition of like-minded, action-oriented people and organizationsworking towards this cause, I think that our children will benefit.
