| Great Energy Tips for Spring & Summer |
Here are lists of simple and smart things that you can do to make a dent in
your next utility bills. We address maintenance for your air
conditioner, electricity peak times, air flow in your home, leaks and
sealing, compact fluorescents and general ways to manage sunshine.
Air Conditioning - Maintenance
Replace or clean a/c filters monthly
Vacuum intake vents monthly
Dust and vacuum home weekly
Keep outside a/c unit clean of any debris
Keep grass/weeds cut back away from a/c unit
Check a/c unit monthly for ants/other insects nesting, then remove them.
Avoid 'Peak' Timing
Run major appliances at night when it is cooler
In some areas, electricity costs are higher per hour during the daytime
Try to only use electrical items that are most necessary during the day
Maximize Airflow
Install/run fans in individual rooms (this keeps air moving)
Enlarge a/c ducts to provide more air flow in less time
Keep all interior doors open for even air flow
Install attic fans
Use exhaust fans when cooking, showering or using the dryer to remove excess heat and humidity
Seal Potential Leaks
Check weather stripping on windows and doors
Install insulated pads around all outlets and switches
Seal gaps, cracks, holes or openings larger than 1/8" that lead into any sort of void. (Potential entrance for bees.)
Use Compact Fluorescents
Replace all light bulbs with fluorescent bulbs
Fluorescent bulbs use less energy, last longer and give off much less heat
Be Smart
Keep curtains closed when temperatures are at their peak
Install and keep mini-blinds closed during day
Install solar screens on all windows
Keep all exterior doors closed to keep out the heat
Close registers (a/c vents) in rooms that are not being used
